OBJECTIVES

 

The Deputy Head of the College will be part of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), working closely with the Master, the Bursar and all the other SLT members. The Deputy Head of the College will be directly responsible to the Master and is the person the Master entrusts with the overview of the pastoral welfare of the pupils, staff CPD, school events and trips, as well as the responsibilities assigned by the Master.

 

The Deputy Head of the College will entail involvement with the strategic planning of the school, maintaining a high profile throughout the Wellington community, fostering key strategies and strong relationships to promote excellence in the quality of the education provided, and working with teams to sustain and enhance the standing of the school. The Deputy Head of the College will also play a key role in promoting the school and its events through school communication, collaboration and innovation.

 

Autonomous, determined and professional behaviour imbuing the Wellington Identity and Values will be key features of the Deputy Head of the College’s practice. The Deputy Head of the College must be able to communicate effectively with the Wellington community: academic and non-academic team members, Governors, parents, extended families and external agents involved in the functions of the setting.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

 

SUPPORT THE MASTER WITH STRATEGIC AND OPERATIONAL MATTERS

  • Assist the Master in the development of the strategic direction of the school and provide professional leadership and management of School Development Plan priorities.

 

  • Support the Master in ensuring the vision for the school is clearly articulated, shared, understood and acted upon effectively by all. Demonstrate the vision and values of the school in everyday work and practice, motivating and working with others to create a shared culture and positive climate.
  • Play a major role, under the direction of the Master, in formulating the aims and objectives of the school, establishing and reviewing the school policies.
  • Together with the SLT, provide and develop positive solutions to achieve diversity, dignity and equality in all aspects of delivery and engagement with the broader community.
  • Support the Master to act in accordance with legislation affecting the conduct of the school, particularly that governing health and safety matters and employment rights.
  • Implement the school’s behaviour, reward and disciplinary policy; Provide phased guidance to the pastoral leader to take on day-to-day responsibility for maintaining good behaviour and discipline among staff and pupils; Advise the Master on disciplinary issues and provide informal support and guidance to staff as necessary.
  • Coordinate the Academic Sub-committee meeting agendas and reports.

Undertake any other professional duties of the Deputy Head of the College as reasonably delegated by the Master.


LEADERSHIP

  • Serve as an instructional leader and ensure continuous improvement and development of pastoral care, safeguarding and enrichment in the whole community.
  • Line manage cross the College, including, but not limited to, Safeguarding and Pupil Support Lead, CPD Coordinator, Director of Ed-tech, Head of Music department and Head of PE department.
  • Lead the CPD coordinator to provide strategic leadership of CPD across the school and strengthen provision and build capacity through effective training, mentoring and coaching programmes aligned to the school’s strategic plans.
  • Develop school calendar, term diary and academic induction programme in liaison with the Heads of School, including term dates, forward planning and information to parents; Overall responsibility for school events, educational visits, Extra-Curricular Activity programme and special occasions, including Summer Fair, EdFest, School Musical and Graduation.
  • Work with the Master, Bursar and Safeguarding and Pupil Support Lead to develop risk awareness and ensure effective health and safety policies and procedures across the college to ensure all WCC safeguarding requirements are met.
  • Work closely with the Admissions and Marketing department to develop effective and innovative forms of pupil recruitment and retention.

 

PARTNERSHIP

  • Oversee the development of Alumni community.
  • Work with other public and voluntary sector agencies, clubs and societies in the local community to develop extended services to enable the wider community (including entire family members) to access knowledge, skills and learning opportunities.
  • Support and develop public service, internationalism and social enterprise activities.

Personal Qualification:

BASIC QUALIFICATION

Education: Bachelor’s degree or above

Major: Education

Language: Fluent English speaker

Working Experience: Minimum of 10 years’ experience in education

Management ExperienceMinimum of 5 years’ leadership experience in education

 

EXPERTISE

  • Broad knowledge of the K12 school education system, especially monitoring pastoral care and staff development
  • An appreciation of international education approaches and models, or the desire to develop appreciation and expertise.

PREFERRED APTITUDES

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and preferably proven ability to communicate effectively with different types of people and in a cross-culture environment
  • Strong grasp of international best practices in education
  • Strong passion for education and pleasure in working with young people
  • Proven ability to work with metrics, numbers and trends, and develop recommendations for action based on analysis
