OBJECTIVES

Bilingual Associate Teacher will assist teaching staff as required during the day. This may include taking small groups within the classroom, offering one to one support under the guidance and supervision of staff members, working with pupils in various learning environments, supervising activities. To support each individual pupil’s growth and development, encouraging them as pupils to be inspired, intellectual, independent, individual and inclusive.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Curriculum Access and Classroom Support

  • Support pupils in understanding lesson instructions, tasks and expectations in English-medium lessons by scaffolding subject-specific vocabulary and academic language.
  • Assist pupils in engaging with learning activities and completing tasks set by the teacher, reinforcing learning under the direction of the class or subject teacher.
  • Provide targeted, structured support to individuals or small groups where language impacts learning, including pre-teaching or reinforcement of key language and concepts to enable access to lesson content.
  • Lead or support small-group learning activities, including targeted English and literacy groups, according to pupil need and under teacher direction.

2. Support for Multilingual Learners

  • Support pupils with developing English/Chinese proficiency to access the curriculum 
  • Provide language support that enables participation
  • Work with English and ELA teachers to align classroom support with language development priorities 
  • Help pupils build confidence in using English in academic contexts 

3. Reading and Literacy Support

  • Support guided reading and other structured literacy activities under the direction of the teacher
  • Work with pupils individually or in small groups to strengthen reading comprehension, vocabulary and confidence in English
  • Monitor and share observations on pupils’ reading engagement and progress with relevant teachers
  • Contribute to the school’s wider literacy priorities by supporting consistent reading habits and access to age-appropriate texts

4. Induction and Integration

  • Support newly admitted pupils, particularly those with lower English proficiency, during their transition into the school 
  • Help pupils understand routines, classroom expectations and learning systems 
  • Provide structured support during the initial period of enrolment to ensure successful integration 
  • Assist pupils in developing independence over time 

5. Targeted Deployment and Collaboration

  • Work flexibly across classes or year groups based on pupil need and school priorities 
  • Collaborate with class teachers, form tutors, Head of subject and Heads of Phase to identify where support has the greatest impact 
  • Deliver targeted support, rather than general classroom assistance 
  • Contribute to discussions on pupil progress, engagement and learning access 

6. Learning Environment and Behaviour

  • Support the development of positive learning behaviours and classroom routines 
  • Help maintain a purposeful and inclusive learning environment 
  • Encourage pupil independence and active participation in lessons 

7. Professional Practice

  • Follow teacher direction and school policies in all classroom support activities 
  • Participate in relevant professional development opportunities 
  • Maintain clear and professional communication with colleagues 
  • Contribute to the wider life of the school where appropriate 
  • Uphold safeguarding and child protection responsibilities at all times 

8. Extended Learning Support

  • Where appropriate, support pupils in extended learning beyond the timetabled school day, including supervised study or boarding prep sessions, according to pupil need, boarding numbers and school deployment priorities
  • Contribute to the development of productive study habits and independent learning routines for pupils who require additional structured support

BASIC QUALIFICATION

  • Bachelor's degree of education or equivalent
  • Excellent oral and written skills both in English and Mandarin
  • Excellent communication skills with a diverse range of people and interpersonal skills
