OBJECTIVES
We are looking for a qualified Deputy Head of Secondary who is keen to support the Head of Secondary in delivering the highest standards of education within the Secondary School. Experience in an international setting is welcome as is experience in multilingual environments.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Leadership & Strategy
- Work with the Head of Secondary in fulfilling the strategic aims of the Secondary School.
- Support the Head of Secondary in all aspects of leading and managing the Secondary School.
- Lead the Pastoral and Safeguarding sections of the Secondary School Strategic Plan.
- Develop and implement a strategy which will deliver the highest standards of student pastoral care and wellbeing.
- Line manage the Heads of Phase (Key Stage 3 and Key Stages 4-5) and the BSM Lead (Behaviour, Safeguarding and Mental Health Lead).
- Promote the school’s values, fostering respect, empathy, and intercultural understanding.
Management
- Support the Head of Secondary in producing, implementing and reviewing policies and procedures for the Secondary School.
- Work with the Head of Secondary and other staff in organising key events for the Secondary School e.g. academic, pastoral, admissions.
Academic
- Teach a reduced timetable (to be agreed annually with the Head of Secondary).
- Support the Heads of Department, and act as a liaison between HoDs/pastoral staff and HoDs/parents, in managing issues which impact upon pupils’ academic performance.
- Lead on investigations into academic issues and incidents, or delegate as required, and advise the Head of Secondary of outcomes.
Safeguarding
- Serve as a Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DDSL), working with the DSL to ensure that all safeguarding policies meet Chinese regulations and international best practices.
- Support the DSL in promoting a positive culture of safeguarding within the Secondary School.
- Maintain accurate safeguarding records on MyConcern, supporting the DSL in handling and closing concerns.
Pupil Wellbeing
- Monitor and respond to pupil wellbeing concerns in a timely and effective manner, liaising with relevant staff as required.
- Maintain accurate records of pupil wellbeing concerns, including actions taken by relevant person.
- Work with the Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in developing a coherent programme for educating pupils about Wellbeing.
- Support the Head of Inclusion, Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in liaising with pupils, parents, Form Tutors and other staff, in promoting positive wellbeing for individual pupils.
Attendance
- Work with the Head of Inclusion, Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in monitoring attendance, identifying patterns and trends, and reporting to the SLT at regular intervals.
- Support the Head of Inclusion, Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in implementing action plans in conjunction with parents when attendance falls below thresholds in the Attendance Policy.
Pupil Rewards
- Work with Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in monitoring rewards, identifying patterns and trends, and reporting to the SLT at regular intervals.
- Support Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in reviewing the Rewards system so that it is motivational.
Pupil Behaviour
- Lead on implementing the Behaviour Policy.
- Work with the Head of Inclusion, Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in monitoring behaviour, identifying patterns and trends and reporting to the SLT at regular intervals.
- Support the Head of Inclusion, Heads of Phase and BSM Lead in implementing action plans in conjunction with staff and parents when behaviour falls below expectations.
- Lead on investigations into behavioural issues and incidents, or delegate as required, and advise the Head of Secondary of outcomes.
- Work with the Head of Secondary in managing serious behaviour incidents.
Parent & Community Engagement
- Provide a point of liaison for Chinese pupils and parents, ensuring that communication with international staff supports and upholds the School’s ethos and values, and adheres to the Communications Procedure.
- Work with the SLT in building strong relationships with parents, guardians, and agents, ensuring open communication regarding pastoral care, wellbeing and safeguarding.
- Organise pastoral-related workshops and information sessions for parents.
Staff Development
- Provide training for staff on pastoral care and wellbeing.
- Mentor staff to develop their skills in pupil support.
Co-Curricular & Personal Development
- Work with the academic and co-curricular teams to ensure holistic pupil development.
- Promote leadership opportunities, service learning, and wellbeing initiatives.
BASIC QUALIFICATION
- Bachelor degree (either teaching or subject degree)
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS, PGCE) or equivalent
- A minimum of 2 years senior management experience is desirable but not essential
- Capable middle leaders who can demonstrate impact of developments and initiatives they have led will be considered
- In-depth knowledge of your teaching specialism
- Up-to-date knowledge of safeguarding and pastoral practices
- Native Chinese Speaker, fluent in English
PREFERRED APTITUDES
- Ability to assess pupils’ interests, needs and developments
- Ability to administer and develop a curriculum

- Technical literacy with proficiency in Microsoft Office
- Cross-cultural work experience is preferred
