OBJECTIVES
Basketball is a core sport within the Wellington College International Shanghai sports programme. It features in the PE curriculum, across recreational CCAs, and within a broad range of competitive teams for both boys and girls.
The Head Coach: Basketball will support the Head of Basketball and the wider Sports Department to develop high-quality basketball programmes across all areas of the College. The coach is part of the PE & Sport team and will contribute to PE lessons throughout the College, as directed.
Weekend coaching, team fixtures and longer residential trips are required, along with flexibility to work evenings and Saturday mornings. Candidates should be able to teach and coach pupils across all age groups.
ROLE-SPECIFIC DUTIES
Work to an agreed timetable and schedule set by the school, including:
-Teaching PE lessons during the school day.-Full involvement in the Co-Curricular Activities and Team Training programme.
-Facilitating morning, evening and/or weekend training sessions as part of the broader basketball programme.
-Maintaining accurate records of pupils’ achievements and performance in competitions.
-Contributing directly to the development of pupils and teams within basketball.
GENERAL DUTIES
-Support general school duties as required.
-Meet all expectations outlined in the staff handbook relating to duties, professional conduct and dress.
-Play an active and supportive role within the department, including assisting with events, organisation and trip supervision where needed.
KEY REQUIREMENTS
-Strong level of spoken English.
-Commitment to maintaining up-to-date qualifications relevant to the role.
-A child-centred approach to coaching and teaching, with an excellent manner when working with children.
Desirable
-Three years’ experience in an English-speaking international school.
Essential
-Experience working as a coach or as part of a PE department within a school.
-Strong understanding of basketball fundamentals and significant coaching experience.
-Familiarity with general standards, expectations and rules of league competitions.
-Ability to assess players’ skills and place them in roles where they can perform most effectively.
-Skill in recognising and using individual players’ strengths to design plays and game strategies.
-Ability to inspire, instruct and support pupil-athletes with clarity, care and professionalism.
A clear understanding of the role of sport — particularly team sport — within a school context.
