OBJECTIVES

The Head of the Junior School at Wellington College International Tianjin will inspire pupils and staff through their leadership in delivering the strategic objectives of the College. They will work with colleagues and pupils in order to support outstanding outcomes academically, pastorally and professionally. The Head of Junior School is expected to play a key role in the strategic development of the College as a member of the Senior Leadership Team (SLT), supporting the Master in this aim.

 

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinating and ensuring the effective delivery of teaching and pastoral care in the Junior School.
  • Leading the Junior School SMT and guiding its strategic direction as outlined.
  • Conducting Quality of Teaching reviews and Walkthrus to maintain the highest standards of performance and professionalism among Junior School teaching staff.
  • Identifying and facilitating continuous professional development (both internal and external) aligned with the School Development Plan (SDP) for the Junior School.
  • Developing the academic calendar in consultation with relevant members of the SLT, SMT, and subject leaders.
  • Designing, developing, implementing, and reviewing all Junior School policy documents and strategic plans in consultation with relevant SLT and SMT members.
  • Managing parental concerns and communications in collaboration with SLT and SMT colleagues.
  • Overseeing disciplinary matters for all pupils within the Junior School.
  • Ensuring pupils adhere to uniform regulations, reflecting positively on the College through their appearance and behaviour.
  • Taking a strategic and practical role in supporting Junior School marketing efforts and assisting in the implementation of marketing strategies.
  • Contributing to admissions operations, meeting admissions targets, and supporting the Director of Admissions in achieving these targets effectively

 

Academic Management 

  • Lead by example as both a teacher and a manager, setting clear expectations for staff and pupils regarding academic standards and teaching quality.
  • Support the ongoing development of high-quality teaching at Wellington, embracing pedagogical innovations while embedding proven best practices.
  • Oversee the setting of academic targets for pupils and drive efforts to achieve them.
  • Collaborate with the SMT to monitor pupil progress and attainment, including planning and implementing interventions and extension activities.
  • Evaluate pupil progress and achievement in accordance with Wellington’s policies, benchmarking performance against peer schools where relevant.
  • Assist in collecting and analyzing data (where appropriate) to support pupil development internally and inform external stakeholders.
  • Work closely with the Heads of SEN and EAL, as well as the Pupil Welfare Officer, to address individual pupil concerns or challenges.

 

Leading people, good relationships

  • Maintain effective, positive working relationships with all staff, pupils, parents, and the local community.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills and adaptability to meet the demands of an international school environment.
  • Provide academic and pastoral support and guidance to all members of the Junior School.
  • Teach mixed-ability classes using diverse instructional strategies to ensure inclusive learning opportunities for all pupils.
  • Possess familiarity with British and international primary curricula, as well as pastoral care strategies.
  • Foster strong curricular and pastoral links between the Junior School, Early Years, and Senior School, collaborating closely with their respective heads.
  • Gather and disseminate Junior School information for use in marketing, parent briefings, and informational sessions.
  • Strengthen ties between the College and the wider community through collaborative initiatives, publications, competitions, and extracurricular activities.
  • Enhance the reputation and professional standing of Wellington College Tianjin by cultivating positive relationships with neighboring schools and other Wellington College group institutions.

 

Personal Qualification:

The person would be expected to have qualified teacher status with good experience of leadership in previous roles. They would be expected to demonstrate competence in areas such as IT, budgeting, personnel development and information systems as well as an understanding of the English National Curriculum and International Primary Curriculum. Experience of working with a Senior and Prep School structure would also be an advantage.
