Key Responsibilities
1. Academic & Pastoral Assistance
- Support PE lessons (e.g. leading small-group activities, provide one-on-one support to pupils who need extra help).
- Mentor younger pupils, offering guidance and acting as a positive role model.
- Support pupil safety by helping supervise changing areas before and after PE lessons.
2. Extracurricular
- Help organise and run ASAs, Interhouse sports activities, and sports events.
- Assist with sports teams (training sessions, matches, and general coaching).
3. Administrative & Operational Duties
- Assist in the preparation of lessons. (e.g. set up equipment and ensure that all necessary resources are in place).
- Maintain PE equipment. (e.g. check, clean and catalogue resources so every lesson starts with safe, up-to-date kit ready to use).
- Support match-day preparation. (e.g. edit letters, liaise with referees, and ensure sports facilities are clean and ready).
- Help with and go on away sports fixtures.
- Supervise pupils during breaks as required.
4. Safeguarding & Welfare
- Promote the welfare and wellbeing of all pupils, following school safeguarding policies.
- Report any concerns to the class teacher or the designated safeguarding lead.
Code of Conduct & Protocol
Purpose
This protocol outlines the professional standards and expectations for all interns and work experience visitors at WCT.
It is designed to:
- Ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils and staff
- Maintain a respectful, professional, and inclusive environment
- Protect interns and assistants from situations that could be misunderstood or cause harm
By signing this document, interns and visitors agree to follow these rules at all times while engaged with the school.
1. Professional Boundaries with Pupils
- Maintain a friendly but professional relationship with pupils — you are not their peer, you are in a supporting staff role.
- No private or secret meetings with pupils in unsupervised areas. Avoid being
- alone with pupils as much as possible.
- Avoid physical contact except for what is appropriate and necessary (e.g. first aid, sports coaching).
- Do not give personal gifts, food or money to pupils.
- Do not exchange personal contact information (private phone number, personal social media) with pupils.
- Do not follow or “friend” pupils on personal social media accounts during your placement.
2. Safeguarding & Child Protection
- Immediately report any safeguarding concerns or incidents to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) or your supervisor.
- Never promise confidentiality to a pupil who discloses a safeguarding issue — follow school reporting procedures.
- Do not take photos or videos of pupils on personal devices.
- Follow school policies for online safety.
3. Prohibited Behaviour
- No drugs — possession, use, or being under the influence of illegal drugs or non-prescribed controlled substances is strictly forbidden.
- No alcohol — no consumption or possession on school premises or during school activities/trips; no working while under the influence.
- No smoking or vaping on school grounds or during school events.
- No sharing of school computer accounts, passwords, or logins with anyone.
- No accessing inappropriate, explicit, or illegal material on school devices or networks.
- No gambling or betting activities with pupils.
4. Technology & Social Media
- Use school IT systems only for authorised purposes.
- Protect your login credentials — do not share them.
- Do not post photos, videos, or information about pupils or school activities on personal social media.
- Follow the school’s Acceptable Use Policy and data protection guidelines.
5. Confidentiality
- Treat all pupil information as confidential.
- Do not discuss pupils or staff outside of school, except with authorised school personnel.
- Follow data protection laws and school privacy policies.
6. Conduct & Professionalism
- Be punctual, reliable, and follow the agreed work schedule.
- Dress appropriately for a school environment.
- Speak respectfully to all pupils, staff, and visitors.
- Seek guidance from your supervisor if unsure about any situation.
- Avoid any behaviour that could bring the school into disrepute.
7. Consequences of Misconduct
Breaching this protocol may result in:
- Immediate termination of your placement
- Reporting to relevant authorities (if laws are broken)
- Loss of any reference or recommendation from the school
