OBJECTIVES
To deliver high-quality teaching and learning to Primary Music pupils in line with the Wellington College curriculum and under the guidance of the Head of Academic Music.
The Teacher of Music will be an enthusiastic and confident educator (teacher) with a passion for working with pupils of all Primary School ages and abilities to instill the love of music that lasts for a lifetime. The successful candidate will also be a proficient musician—comfortable performing with others, contributing to ensembles, and supporting the broader performance culture of the College. They will have the ability to develop and lead instrumental and vocal ensemble as appropriate and contribute to the broader music programme of the school, under the direction of the Director Music.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful candidate will play a central role in the continued development of Music at Wellington College International Shanghai, with their focus on the Primary Music programme. We seek a teacher who is excited by the opportunity to strengthen and expand Music provision in a dynamic and growing school.
The Teacher of Music is responsible for planning, preparing, and teaching engaging and progressive Music lessons in alignment with College curriculum expectations and the direction of the Head of Academic Music. Lessons should provide clear coverage, continuity, and progression across year groups.
The teacher is also expected to undertake additional duties as reasonably directed by the Head of Primary / Primary Leadership team or the Senior Leadership Team. All Wellington College International Shanghai employees are expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism in teaching, communication, and relationships with students, colleagues, and parents.
A positive and purposeful learning environment must be maintained at all times. Lessons should be structured, well-paced, and appropriately differentiated to meet student needs and curriculum targets.
Teaching & Learning Responsibilities:
• Continuously evaluate the effectiveness of teaching, maintain strong classroom practice, and ensure positive student progress. Fully participate in staff appraisal, including observing colleagues and welcoming reciprocal observation.
• Assess pupil progress regularly through formal and informal means, following College and departmental expectations. Share concerns about student progress or conduct promptly with the Director.
• Maintain professional, timely communication with parents. Attend Parents’ Meetings and provide clear, accurate feedback on student progress. Produce written reports as required.
• Keep accurate and up-to-date academic records, ensuring they are shared appropriately with colleagues and accessible to senior staff.
• Contribute to the ongoing development, documentation, and review of Music curriculum policies and schemes of work.
Professional Expectations
General:
• Attend the College during stipulated hours and participate in all required meetings and directed-time activities.
o Undertake duties: playground, lunch, after-school, and other assigned as timetabled
• Model exemplary punctuality and promote strong timekeeping habits in students. Monitor lateness and follow appropriate interventions.
• Apply College rules consistently and support high standards of behaviour, dress, and conduct to protect student wellbeing and uphold the College ethos.
• Promote safe working practices in all learning areas. Reinforce student responsibility for equipment and facilities, with clear consequences for misuse or damage.
• Maintain a smart and professional standard of appearance.
• Play an active role in the weekly co-curricular programme, including ensembles, choirs, productions, or instrumental groups.
• Make meaningful contributions to College assemblies, newsletters, and events to celebrate musical learning and student achievement.
• Support the annual calendar of performances, concerts, and community events.
• Provide cover for absent colleagues as required.
BASIC QUALIFICATION
Education:
Bachelor’s degree
Teaching certificate with QTS.
Working experience:
• A minimum of 5 years teaching experience in a primary school setting. Experience of international teaching desirable
